Funeral services for Wayland “Poppie” Brown, 87, of Rush Springs, Oklahoma will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 1, 2025, at Lawton Ritter Gray Funeral Home with Rev. Roddy Oaks officiating.
Burial will follow at the Sterling Cemetery, in Sterling Oklahoma.
Mr. Brown passed away on Thursday, April 24, 2025, in Duncan, Oklahoma
The viewing will be held on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. with a special viewing and visitation for family and friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Wayland was born on April 9, 1938, to Winston and Cleta Fay (Oaks) Brown in Lamesa, Texas. Wayland had a twin brother, Leland Brown and another brother Charles. The family moved to California in 1944 and then moved to Lawton in 1955 where he met the love of his life, Virginia Gayle (York) Brown and they were wed August 30, 1958. Wayland served in the Army National Guard from 1958 through 1963 and Civil Service from 1963 to 1980. Wayland loved coon hunting, rodeos, fishing, family cookouts, camping, building anything and spending time with his family and friends. He loved spending time with his grandkids and his great grandkids.
Mr. Brown is survived by his wife, Virginia, of the home, his son, Winston F. Brown and wife Janet, of Sterling Oklahoma, his son Wayland Brown Jr. and wife Kathy, of McAlester Oklahoma and daughter Carrie Sullivan and husband Marlin, of Marlow, Oklahoma, grandchildren and spouses, Brandy Brown, Matthew and Lacey Farris, Chris and Brittany Brown, Cassie and Travis Bishop, Robert Farris, Bladen and Ryan Brown, Ashley Sullivan, Nathaniel Brown, Kaitlin Brown and Robbie Sullivan, great grandchildren Treyvon Crabtree, Andre Crabtree, Bransen Bishop, Samantha Bishop, Zachary Bishop, Brayden Watts, Graycie Farris, Wyatt Farris, Kopeland Brown, Emberlynn Berger-Brown, Levi Brown, Bryanna Brown, Wesley Houtz, Lilly Houtz, Kade Killgore, Kylie Barrington, Kayler Barrington, Kase Whaley, Kord Sullivan and Kreek Sullivan.
Mr. Brown was preceded in death by his parents; Winston and Cleta Fay Brown and his twin brother Leland Brown.
